These are shaped replacement materials fitted directly into the tooth cavity, thus acting as an intermediate solution between a direct restoration and a crown.

Onlays only replace the missing dental tissue; therefore they require the removal of the decayed areas of the tooth first. They are composed of either pure porcelain or ceramic materials, and are bonded to the tooth.
